Associate Professor David Packham qualified MBBS in London in 1981. Following medical appointments in the UK he came to Melbourne in 1986 to complete his MD thesis at the University of Melbourne, “Renal Disease in Pregnancy”. He subsequently continued as a Consultant Nephrologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Austin Hospital.

He is committed to providing excellent clinical care for patients with chronic kidney disease particularly in the areas of:

  • Diabetic nephropathy
  • Hyperkalaemia
  • Cardio-renal failure
  • Polycystic kidney disease

A/Prof. Packham has been Director of the Melbourne Renal Research Group which is based at Reservoir Private Hospital for the past ten years and employs three research co-ordinators. The group has participated in more than 35 international clinical trials in a variety of chronic kidney conditions. A/Prof. Packham and the Melbourne Renal Research Group have established an international reputation for excellence. His current research includes diabetic nephropathy, renal anaemia and hyperkalaemia and the first trial of adult mesenchymal stem cells in Type 2 diabetic nephropathy. Patients may be offered the opportunity to participate in these clinical trials.

He is available to discuss urgent referrals or any clinical issues with General Practitioners.

A/Prof. Packham’s billing policy is to charge an approximately $120 over the Medicare rebate on initial consultation with all subsequent consultations being $10 over the Medicare rebate. Veteran Card holders are exempt from consultation fee. Pensioners and Health Care Card holders will be exempt from review consultation fees.
